Kids Cubano Sandwiches

I know there is a lot of political discussion surrounding the embargo that was recently lifted from Cuba, and the excitement of a embassy being built there. There’s also something exciting and mysterious about a place that has been ‘forbidden’ as a travel zone for as long as I’ve been alive.

So needless to say I’m silly excited that someday, in my lifetime, I will be able to travel to Cuba. I know it won’t look the same, or have the same politics around it, but I’ve heard from numerous non-Americans that it’s a beautiful place with amazing food, and I’m very excited to add it to my list of places I’m dying to go to.

With that said, I was talking to Zara about Cuba, and trying to explain (as best you can to a 4  year old) why we couldn’t got to Cuba, but now can. Being her mother’s daughter, she asked about the food. I for the life of me (without resorting to the internet) could not think of one Cuban-specific dish, other than the Cubano sandwich. Drinks? I could think of plenty. So I set off to make a kid-friendly Cubano, with what I had on hand.

I bought mini sandwich rolls from the grocery store because, to be honest, I just didn’t feel like baking my own bread. Plus it was super cute and in no way broke the bank. I’ll count it as a win.

This is what you’ll need; (serves 1 kid and 2 adults)

Mini rolls (5)

Deli ham (4 slices)

Pork Tenderloin (we had it leftover) 8 slices, sliced thin

4 pickles, sliced into manageable sandwich slices

Mustard (I used French whole grain)

4 pieces Havarti Dill cheese, not traditional, I know.

Mini Cubano Sandwich

Easy pork and ham sandwich

This is the kids plate, hard to see the love that went into this sandwich. So, I’ll tell you how to build it.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with tinfoil.

Cut each roll in half and generously spread mustard on the bottom half. Now add cheese, pickle, ham, pork and cheese (Think of the cheese as the glue).

Cook for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and pork is heated through.

We served with salad, strawberries and grapes.

This was SO easy, we put it together in 10 minutes flat and got rave reviews from kids and adults alike!
